Today in Harpers: To the Bat Closet

At the end of one semester in a college fiction writing class, our professor pointed out that in every story any of us had submitted that featured a gay character, something bad had happened to that character. He said this not as a criticism of us, but as a way of discussing the larger fiction landscape of the time, in which to be a gay character was to be tortured, abused, killed.

Turns out this is also true in the comics world.
