Gawker Stalker: Light of my life, bane of George Clooney, & etc. Long after we’re all dead and gone, this will be remembered as the true genius of the site. It offers everything that the business-side guys are always drooling over: Free, viral user-generated content that people are actually interested in. I’ve long been a fan; this, from 2003, is my contribution:
· Spotted: Wallace Shawn, walking down Houston street with crew near Katz’s around 9:30 Thursday. Resisted the urge to say “Inconceivable.”
Still, like much in diminished Gawkerdom (come back, Jessica Coen), Gawker stalker has entered the winter of our discontent, and I think it’s because Clooney has finally got his revenge: Rather than trying to bring the Stalker down, celebs and their people are embracing it, and Sending in Items About their Clients. Because, really, this, from yesterday, is a stalk only a publicist could have written:
6th Ave & 50th St
Jennifer Connelly looked like she was enjoying a girls’ night out with a few friends. The all-American beauty was in line at Radio City Music Hall to see the Oscar award winners from Once, Glenn Hansard and Marketa Irglova, in concert
Sure, this has probably been going on for a while, and sure, it’s probably smart for the PR folks, but really, guys, if you’re going to send in fake stalks, at least try to make them sound like they came from a civilian.
