Breaking: They’ve Figured Out the Antikythera Mechanism

Just in time for the Olympics we learn that scientists have figured out the purpose of what is commonly described as the world’s first analog computer, the Antikythera Mechanism. Apparently, in addition to keeping track of various astronomical events, it was also designed “record the timing of the panhellenic games, a four-year cycle that was a common framework for chronology by the Greeks,” the NY Times says.

Which solves at least some of the mysteries set out last year in this nice New Yorker piece.
