Dear David Brooks: The Reason They Call Them Red States Is That They Are Full of People Who Vote for Republicans, and So Maybe John McCain Really Felt Entirely Comfortable There

Late to this one, but this sentence, in David Brooks’ John McCain column a few days ago caused me to do, as they used to say in the biz, a full stop:

McCain started his general-election campaign in poverty-stricken areas of the South and Midwest. He went through towns where most Republicans fear to tread and said things most wouldn’t say.

Um, where exactly are these anti-GOP Southern and Midwestern towns again? Does he mean Southern and Midwestern Massachusetts?
