Even though he was responsible for me having to suffer through a whole year of lame jokes after his no. 9 seeded team upset no. 1 Kansas in the second round of the 1992 NCAA tournament (OK: ‘How do you stop the Jayhawks? UTEP on them’), I always has a tremendous respect for Don Haskins, longtime coach of the University of Texas-El Paso’s men’s basketball team, who died today. And no so much for that 1966 championship game that everyone talks about, but for what came after; El Paso isn’t exactly a prime spot for a coach with any ambition, and the fact that Haskins stayed, and continued to turn out great teams, speaks volumes.
